How To Motivate Yourself Even When You Want To Chuck A Sickie

Today is just one of those days, it seems. I snoozed my alarm 3 times. I considered turning off my alarm and ‘accidentally’ over-sleeping before begrudgingly crawling out of bed and flinching at the light. As I stepped outside, I briefly considered turning around, running back indoors and getting straight back under the covers.

But I didn’t. Instead I set out on my daily trek to work and it’s a decision I make every single day. Every day, I snooze my alarm 3 times, consider calling in sick, pull the covers over my head, groan and moan, then I get out of bed, get ready and set off for work.

I’ve always been taught a good work ethic can take you further than any amount of talent so it’s important to be able to motivate yourself even when all you really want to do is chuck a sickie.

We all need a little help motivating ourselves after the holidays so here are our top tips to boost your motivation:

  1. Focus on the “why” and remind yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing.
  2. Just aim for 10 minutes. If you focus on your task for 10 minutes, more often than not once you get started, you’ll get in the zone and will keep going.
  3. Fake it until you make it. Behave like you’re really motivated and you’ll trick your mind and body into actually being motivated.
  4. Find an ‘accountability buddy’ or a partner to help motivate and encourage you to do what you said you would.
  5. Break it down. Rather than getting overwhelmed by a big task or goal, break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks that are easier to work through.
  6. Make the most of the tools that can help. Whether it’s setting reminders in your calendar or using an app like Flexy that makes a process easier, there are a range of tools to help keep you on track to achieve your goals.
